    why the current situation in that area is so complex. Hatred, bitterness and resentment run deeply in the Balkans and once these sentiments are intertwined with political disputes, the  result is war, violence and ravaging which have few clear solutions. Yugoslav History Yugoslavia has been important throughout history, based  upon its ideal location (History and Government of Yugoslavia). This area was once referred to as Macedonia and had been controlled by various others through the ages.  During World War II Yugoslavia was divided - between the fascist Ustashe and the Nazi State which consisted of Slovenia, Croatia,  and Bosnia-Herzegovina (A Brief History of Yugoslavia). It was during this time that there was mass killings of Serbian Orthodox believers as well as Jews and Gypsies (A Brief  History of Yugoslavia). After World War II Joseph Tito managed to unify the six republics into a communist dictatorship, which was independent of Russia (A Brief History of Yugoslavia).  Amazingly, he was able to suppress the religious conflict which had wrecked the country for many years (A Brief History of  Yugoslavia). Although the fighting stopped for the most part, there was no effort made for the various parties to actually resolve their conflicts, so this was much of the  impetus for the conflicts which exploded in the 1990s (A Brief History of Yugoslavia). Tito died in 1980 and the  tensions started to mount again (A Brief History of Yugoslavia). This was the era of Slobodan Milosevic who promised the Serbs that no one would ever again beat them
