    in his 1859 classic A Tale of Two Cities (PG; Nursing Administration Quarterly 18). These same words could be applied to the recent century. Since the close  of the twentieth century, much has been said and written about the marvelous strides in technology and sociology that were accomplished and achieved within that one hundred year span.  Many of these amazing advancements took place within the field of medicine, which in all rights should enable the medical world to claim a much higher vantage point in both  knowledge and technology upon leaving the twentieth century as compared to leaving the nineteenth. In 1999, the simple act of swallowing a pill took care of many medical situations  that very often resulted in death in 1899. The arrival of medical assistance in 1899 often involved slow travel over difficult terrain and often arrived too late, whereas assistance  in 1999 was just the simple push of a button or a fast trip over smooth pavement away. This reflects a new improved and advanced world of medicine.  The other side of the mirror, however, reflects a different image and shows the darker, more tarnished side of progress, a progress that has traded benevolence for a bank account.  Modern medical technology is a gift, not a privilege, and should be equally available and accessible to all regardless of financial or social standing. Accessible healthcare has been the  topic of much debate over the past few years, and a wide gulf in reasoning has separated those that are for the widespread implementation of inexpensive, quality healthcare and those  that stand against it. Proponents of the issue point to the fact that reliable healthcare is not readily available or accessible to those who need it most, especially prenatal
