    identity is evident in the, characters of Achille and Plunkett. It would seem that the way in which Walcott has set this epic poem, that he may identify, at  first, with Achille. Achille is shown to be the traditionalist, and in many respects is representative of all those things that are good and right about tradition. However, in juxtaposition  with Hector, the not-so-good things, the inflexibility and the sense of stubborn refusal to change, are also depicted. In Walcotts search for his own identity, it would seem that he  is addressing those parts of himself that are at conflict inside of him. This poem is very much like the Odyssey  in that there is an overseas journey, in which the heroes are changed for the better after coming through many trials. This places the conflict between Achilles and Hector, for  the attentions of Helen, in a different light. Hector has thrown off nearly all of his traditional African heritage and as such represents the modern society in contrast to Achilles  representation of the traditional. The Comet, a sixteen-seater passenger van, was  the chariot that Hector bought. . . . Each row was a divan of furred leopardskin. . . . te  Space Age had come to the Island. Passengers...were sliding into two worlds without switching gears. (Walcott 117) It becomes apparent that Walcott is torn between a certain type of  hybridization which has come to the Island. Traditions are being forgotten and new ideas and ways are being embraced in their place. The fear is palpable as Walcott and his
