need to look a the background. The company is a joining of two companies, AOL, who made the acquisition of Time Warner in 2001 to create a true multimedia company  (Microsoft Money, 2002). If we look at the background of the company we can see how they have a strength in seizing opportunities and are capable of developing flexible emergent  strategies. To understand this we first need to consider the history and development of the company. AOL was founded in the early  1980s under a different name, that of Control Video Corp (Alsop, 1997). The aim of the company at this time was to be an online company that specialised in the  provision of online gaming (Alsop, 1997). This was the time when the Commodore 64 was seen as advanced, but this company did not succeed, and then faced a reorganisation. Now  the company became Quantum Computer Services and still provided online service, but this time it though it had found a better market, that of the development of online services for  other companies, the most interesting of these was Commodore themselves, whom it developed a service call Q-Link (Alsop, 1997). The company started to grow and developed strategic alliance with Tandy  through their Radio Shack stores where they supported a new dos based on line service provided by Quantum. Another agreement with Apple looked to give them a first mover advantages  with their software designed for the ill fated Apple IIgs but this was withdrawn by Apple at the last minute, this looked like a disaster, but in the end this  was to be the making of AOL. With all this spare software and nothing to do with it the company decided to launch the software itself under the name America
