    people go to a university and derive a background in a certain major subject, but when they go out into the real world, things are decidedly different. Doctors experience this  when they emerge from medical school and find that their real educations are derived during their stints as residents. Similarly, attorneys go through three years of intense training only to  find that much of their book knowledge is either not applicable or difficult to apply without further instruction. The real world can be a wake up call to many graduating  students at any level of education. In looking at vocations in management, one finds the same situation. MBAs who graduate sometimes find that they have a dilemma. They have learned  a lot in school, and understand the theories, but when they secure a position, they discover many things that were not in the books. Managers come up against unique situations  every day and while some book knowledge may be applied, they must be creative enough to come up with their own solutions to everyday problems. First, a look at  some theories and how they may be applied, or why they are impractical, will help to shed light on this subject. Management in todays day and age is represented by  a slew of models from the loosely structured, state of the art company to the telecommuting, electronic environment all the way to the old fashioned, hierarchical corporation. Business management has  a long history and while things are quite different today than they were at the turn of the century, many of the rules utilized in the current business arena evolved  from turn of the century theorists. In terms of scientific management, Frederick Winslow Taylor was one of the original theorists and is the management thinker that Harrington (1999) claims
