    the story will be told by the only character who could best tell the tale and further the themes presented. The act of placing oneself into the mind of the  character is what separates good authors from the not so good. Susan Hill, in her work, I am the King of the Castle, not only does this well, but manages  to speak from the point of view of a young boy. Edmund, his father and grandfather all live together in a red bricked house that they call, Warings. Soon  after the grandfather dies, Edmunds father feels as if he needs to hire a housekeeper. Mrs. Kingshaw gets the position and brings with her, her son Charles. Edmund resents Charles  presence right away and begins to torment Charles every minute they are together inside the house. Yet, when they are outdoors, Charles is clearly the one in charge. However, in  contrast, Charles does not bully or torment Edmund. This is a chilling story of increasing suspense, it has to be said. Susan Hill manages to tell the story  as an omniscient narrator, and yet manages to capture the nuance and intent of young boys in her dialogue. Her use of flashbacks develops the characters, especially that of Charles,  so that when he dies, it is all the more a shock to the reader. The point of view, though it is told by an omniscient narrator is still that  of Edmund, for the most part. In it the reader is privy to the jealousies, the hatred, the growing darkness inside of him. If there is one theme and issue  that children universally know about, its the persecution from or by a bully. Either a child has had a personal experience with a bully or knows someone that has. Therefore,
