Furthermore, these stories both show boys who are struggling with who they are and where they fit in the world, as they experience events which change  them and force them to leave behind their innocence and youth. Because of this, the characters in both of these stories must struggle with some very important issues and events  - often requiring insight and maturity beyond their years. It is these very struggles which create the opportunity for these  boys to learn who they are and to grow into their eventual role as men. In this way then, both Ralph and Pony leave behind elements of their youth  as they embrace a newfound sense of independence earned through the tough circumstances which befall them. The Themes of Family and Independence in "Lord of the Flies"  and "The Outsiders" Lord of the Flies is a book which is basically about the moral character of people. This  is rather clearly illustrated through the character of Ralph, who struggles with right and wrong, and also struggles with Jack who is in many ways the opposite of himself.  What we learn by reading this book is that society as a whole is only as good as the individuals which  it contains. This is both a moral lesson and a spiritual one. Religion effectively says the same thing - that we are all parts of the bigger whole  and that we are judged on our individual behavior. In this way then, there is actually a great deal of significance to the message which this author provides behind
