    be presented in the cultural context in which they find themselves, but beneath the social trappings and historical rhetoric lies the truth, or the elementary idea. Interestingly enough, these same  elementary truths, more or less, still serve to act as guideposts for the modern reader, just as they did for readers in other eras. The work of Margaret Atwood and  Vladamir Nabokov in the mystery field have led many to wonder whether the form of the mystery was sacrificed for this universal truth, since neither mystery is solved at the  end. What effect does this have on the modern audience and could the authors, given the same characters and situations, have ended them differently and still leave the reader satisfied?  The answer is an equivocal, "No". Writing in more than mere pen to paper, though the general world at large is left to think so. This is especially true  where the mystery genre is concerned. Not only do the authors keep track of the real story line, but the suppositions by various characters in the stories. Such is the  case in Atwood and Nabokov. There is an interplay between motive, and resolved, unresolved dreams and motivations which move the characters forward toward only one logical resolution. Therefore, these stories  ended as they could have logically ended. So, too, it must be stated that this spelling out of the ending of the mysteries is a myth. If one reads  closely enough, the endings are there in both pieces. That the author assumes some savvy on the part of the reader and does not declare the reader indigent of intelligent  thought, they immediately bring the reader into the story with the characters. The reader is given all the information they need to come to the conclusion on their own without
