Rodgers - November 2001 -- properly!  Introduction Miltons "Paradise Lost" is a work that presents the reader with an intricate look at the historical and fantastical world of God, Satan, the angels, Adam, and  Eve. It is a work that is complex and thoroughly detailed in almost every aspect one could consider. Milton provided a work that has clearly stood the test of time,  and clearly presented a story that illustrates the need for good an evil in the universe that is Gods. The primary character that serves to offer us the reality of  evil is Satan, a character introduced in the first chapter of Miltons work. The fact that he is introduced in the first chapter, and greatly detailed in that chapter, illustrates,  among other things, that Milton felt his story and presence were necessary to truly illuminate the story of God, his angels, Adam, and the need for Gods son. Satan is  not merely presented, and then dismissed, as simply an evil entity that it out to rule, but rather offered as a very important figure in the history of man, both  spiritually and physically. In the following paper we examine that reality, discussing Satans role in Miltons story, thereby illustrating several of the objectives of Milton as it relates to illustrating  the necessity for evil in the world that God had created for reasons of free will and to stand as example of what man can become.
