    cockroach, possibly the lowest, scummiest bug that one can find on earth. Yet by the end of the book, the reader is actually sympathizing with the bug, perhaps realizing that  through Gregors mute appeal and continuing hopefulness, rescue from his family will be forthcoming. Although the reader expects that, by the end, no one will rescue poor Gregor, throughout the  book, the reader hopes for an inkling of compassion from the family that Gregor has loved, but a family that doesnt really seem to be worthy of his devotion.  Probably one of the more shocking factors of Kafkas book is that Gregors change comes immediately rather than slowly and subtlety. He goes  to bed one night a human and wakes up the next morning a cockroach. Gregor, as a human, however, probably is not much more useful to his family than a  cockroach would be - although he is the Samsa familys sole breadwinner, their interest in him is mainly in terms of how much money he brings home each week. Gregor,  perhaps aware of his own role in his family, isnt so much concerned that hes a bug when he first realizes that he is one, as much as he is  concerned that he cant get up and go to work to support his family. Even from the start, he does not want to be a burden on his family.  Gregors concerns become more pronounced, however, when he shows himself to his family. His mother screams in horror, his father prods him  back into his room with a walking stick and his sister wont have anything to do with him. As time moves on, Gregor turns more bug-like, eschewing the furniture for
