For example, with the advent of the new technology and global communication, it is evident that national barriers are being dissolved and there  is a much greater degree of interaction between different countries, both on a personal and a corporate level. From this point of view, it is clear that the method of  communication which is employed should be one that is familiar to all, even though this does not in itself mean that the individuals concerned would need to sacrifice their original  methods of communication in order to participate in a global one. In many  countries, the second language which is taught in schools is English: in addition, most Europeans already have English as a second language, and in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres  English is already widely used, since it is the common tongue of both the US and Australia. It would be possible to argue, perhaps, that there are other languages that  have a greater flexibility and range of nuances, and that English is perhaps limited in this way. However, the fact remains that a vast majority of the worlds population already  speak English at some level of competence, and it would be counter-productive to try and establish another language as the one which is to be used on a global level.  The main reason for the widespread use of English is historical, and  dates back to the era of colonisation and expansion.
