    The prevailing thoughts and perspectives that can come alive due to conflict, political movements, or great times of turmoil or experimentation can all have a prolonged effect on the sensibilities  of a writer. This can be said for the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and exampled in several works, including One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Colonel. The  violence that was being experienced in Columbia during this time can be said to have had a great influence on Garcia Marquezs work. In No One Writes the Colonel, Garcia  Marquez tells the tale of the Colonel, who for fifteen years every Friday, has been faithfully anticipating the arrival of the pension check promised by a long overthrown government. Near  poverty, half-starved, and living on credit, he and his wife have just lost their son, who was shot to death by the opposing political party. This can be said  to be a direct implication to the political unrest of the time and the overwhelming theme of isolationism that many villages practiced, in effect burying their heads in the sand  hoping that the violence wouldnt reach them. But of course it does. Much like the Colonels stubborn refusal to accept the reality of the situation concerning the government (that they  have totally disrespected him and used him, then effectively disposed of him), the town itself has refused to realize that the violence embraces them all. It can be said that  a good deal of the violence and oppression in his novels is used as the background and backdrop for the story to center around. The violence, itself, one could say,  is typically politically based and manifested. What is also shown, one could say is that this political cruelty that is shown nearly crushing his characters in every novel has the
