AMS customers have access to book-purchasing advice, distribution and supply chain management, advertising and promotional support and a proprietary software, Vendor Managed  Inventory, to help manage AMS distribution system (AMS, 2002). AMS distributes primarily general interest books including bestsellers, travel books, computer books, mass-market paperbacks, childrens books and coffee table books (AMS,  2002). The companys main method of operation is ordering a select number of titles with high-volume potential, as well as bundling titles  and shipping them to customers on a weekly basis (Hoovers Business Profiles, 2002). The company is located in San Diego, California with  domestic distribution centers located in Indianapolis, Indiana; Dallas, Texas; Baltimore, Maryland and Sacramento, California (AMS, 2002). AMS recent acquisition of Publishers Group West (PGW) during the early part of 2002  means an additional distribution center in Reno, Nevada, as well as a main sales office in New York City (AMS, 2002). AMS also distributes globally to Canada, Mexico, the United  Kingdom and Australia (AMS, 2002). Some of AMS main customers include Costco, Sams Clubs, BJs Wholesale, Office Depot, Staples, Frys, The Borders Group and Amazon.com (AMS, 2002).  Advanced Marketing Services, Inc. completed its initial public offering of common stock during July 1987 (AMS, 2002). AMS is probably best known for its Vendor  Managed Inventory software (VMI), a proprietary method that analyzes previous sales data to forecast future sales by title and location (AMS, 2002).
