These are all sectors where there has been increased competition within the last  few years, putting pressure on the need for price decreases, cost savings and to increase competitive advantages in order to retain market share. SBCs recent performance reflects these changes in  the market, the majority of income comes from the wireline operations that account for 75% of the operating revenues (SBC, 2001). The company now operates in 19 states, an increase  of 6 states over the last two years, expanding into Texas and Connecticut in 2000 and in 2001 into Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma, these expansion areas helped counteract some  of the losses incurred in other areas (SBC, 2001). The expansion also help reduce the impact of the weak 2001 US economy. The wireless operation accounted for 16%  of the revenue, the directory segment accounted for 8% of revenue the remainder came from the other segments. The performance of the company can be assessed using the financial ratios  that are produced from he results. This may indicate trends as well as strengths and weaknesses within the company. Overall the performance for the accounts that ended on the 31st  of December 2001 showed a decrease in performance, with total revenues falling by 11% to only $45.91 billion (Wall Street Journal, 2003, SBC, 2001). However, the net income only fell  9% to $7.26 billion, these were direct results of the economic and environmental conditions and were felt by most companies in the industry, especially due to the increased competition in  long distance calling.
