Research demonstrates two extremely disturbing facts concerning  domestic violence. First of all, research data shows that domestic violence rates are high, as there is lifetime prevalence among women of 44 percent; and, secondly, research data substantiates the  logical deduction that psychological, as well as physical, domestic abuse generates significant negative effects that are detrimental to health, mentally, socially, and physically (Coker, 2006). Intimate partner violence has definitively  been shown to be a strong risk factor associated with a wide range of negative health outcomes and impaired functioning; therefore, the US Preventive Services Task Force has issued a  recommendation to institute routine screening for domestic violence. While screening for domestic violence is an important tertiary prevention measure, Coker (2006) maintains that the challenge being faced by public  and community health is to move toward accomplishing goals with address the needs of primary and secondary prevention. This research paper focuses on the need to address family violence at  the secondary prevention level. Secondary Prevention The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describe the three levels of prevention, that is, primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in the  following manner. Primary prevention strategies are those interventions or methods that are taken in order to prevent a person from incurring a condition or disease that is detrimental to their  health. Secondary prevention addresses the steps taken after the condition or disease has developed, but prior to the point when the condition/disease has become acute or chronic. In other words,
