    is a tenuous relationship wherein the reader expects that the story will follow some sort of a logical thought process, which will lead to a satisfying conclusion. Whether this ending  is a happily ever after type of ending or a happily NOT so ever after ending, would seem to be secondary to the ending being believable. In John Steinbecks  novel, Of Mice and Men, the tale shows the relationship between to men who are friends. In fact, it can be said that they have been together so long that  they need one another in order to be whole people. The novel takes place during the Great Depression and it finds the two friends, Lennie and George looking for work  at a ranch in California. They have just had to leave their last place of employment because Lennie, who is slightly mentally slow, was wrongly accused of rape. Their dream  unfolds as they discuss their hope for owning a small ranch where they can raise vegetables and rabbits. The only detail that Lennie seems to remember is the rabbit. They  arrive late at the ranch where they are expected to start working and they become involved with the life there. However, a man named, Curley, has a wife who everyone  suspects of being promiscuous. She is a flirt and immediately begins flirting with the bunk hands. Curley, a highly volatile man, and attempts to start a fight with George. George  backs away, but this only sets the scene for the confrontation that will soon occur. Shortly after a litter of puppies is born, Candy, one of the other workers, offers  a pup to Lennie. Curley comes into the bunkhouse, looking for trouble and accuses Lennie of laughing at him. Whether it is true or not is of little consequence as
