    is due to the fact that they involve completely different stories and different settings, as well as seemingly different plots and outcomes. But, there are perhaps as many similarities in  the two stories as there are differences. Bearing that in mind the following paper examine 4 similarities and 4 differences when considering the two books together. Similarities One  of the most powerful themes in both books which provide us with the first similarity to be discussed is that which involves the inherent nature of a society. The societies  which control, those seen in both books, presume to be civilized. They presume that the white man is right, and they presume that they would never engage in activities that  would seem animalistic. The truth, this truth, however, is revealed in both books. In "Heart of Darkness" we see a hypocritical nature of white man that indicates the civilized only  mask their beastly traits, putting them under the guise of intelligence and wisdom. Kurtz is the man who represents this truth in Conrads book. And, this is something that even  Marlow comes to understand, which is seen when he makes a comment on the evil nature of man, civilized man, as seen in the industry he was examining: ""It was  reckless without hardihood, greedy without audacity, and cruel without courage" (Conrad 102). In Ellisons novel we see a young Black man coming to realize the horrors of the civilized white  man. He assumes he has a chance in the world of white men, white men who seem so intelligent and civilized. But, early on in the book we see a  sheer lack of civility when we see a blonde dancing erotically and savagely. This is a very subtle symbolic presentation of how the world will unfold for the young man,
