    my face"(Fuentes, 1). The writers of Latin America continue to demonstrate the power of language to effect change within ones own  country. It can be said that among the literature giants of the last century, Carlos Fuentes, would stand among them. His books, all based on Latino themes and placed in  Spanish settings bring that culture alive for all readers from all backgrounds. In the novel, The Death of Artemio Cruz, it can be said he reached a great climax in  his use of second person, out of order chronology, and other innovations, thereby bringing the life and mind of the Spanish man and woman into the forefront. In brief, the  Death of Artemio Cruz chronicles the past life of an unscrupulous businessman. The whole novel is told in a sort of disjointed flashback. Meanwhile his family, who really feel no  sense of allegiance to him are frantically trying to locate his will to find out if they will inherit the family fortune. It is during various family members searches for  the will that they relate various episodes from their lives and interactions with Cruz. When one reads this, one is reminded of the works of Faulkner, who also tended to  do this type of disjointed reminisce. The story gives a great illustration of how setting can become as real and subtle a character as a living, breathing, clothes wearing  character in the story. It can be said that just about any attribute one can ascribe to a character can also be used to describe certain settings. A setting can  be calm, at peace with itself, or seething, boiling and discontent as the odd angled buildings and broken windows. It can be the quiet solitude of a rustic church, or
