The Revolt of Mother is one of her classic stories and tells the tale of  a woman who stands up for what she believes in. She takes it upon herself to move her family into a new barn despite her husbands belief that their  current home is completely suitable. The Revolt of Mother is extraordinary in terms of the strength which the character of Sarah possess and yet she retains her dignity  and devotion to her family at all times. Freeman has done a remarkable in job in this piece in blending fierce strength with compassion and respect. What  is especially remarkable about the writings of Freeman, including The Revolt of Mother, is to consider the era in which she wrote and how advanced she was in terms of  expressing ideas about womens rights. Freeman was very assertive in her writing and for the time in which she wrote, she was considered rather controversial. This is significant  in that it lends even more drama and intrigue to her female characters given that the climate of the day was not in favor of her views at all.  Biography of Mary E. Wilkins Freeman Mary E. Wilkins Freeman was born in 1852 and grew up in poverty due to  her fathers inability to provide fully for his family (Biography of Mary Wilkins Freeman). Her father suffered from severe depression as a result of his experiences in the Civil  War (Biography of Mary Wilkins Freeman). Mary, therefore, tried to help out by painting and teaching school but eventually turned toward writing as a source of income to help
