While Avon and Mary Kay are certainly to good examples of companies that have relied on direct selling to promote and  sell their merchandise, direct sales for many people is more than a way to earn some extra "pin money." Once the purview of board house wives with time on  their hands or people couldnt make money any other way, direct sales today represents a viable way for men and women to either supplement or make their income. Experts estimate  that the direct selling industry is a multibillion dollar one (CBS Marketwatch, 2003). While a few people in the direct selling industry to manage to pull down a six-figure income,  the majority of direct sellers spend only a few hours a week selling, and they earn enough money for vacation or another luxury (CBS Marketwatch, 2003).  While companies such as Amway and Mary Kay began making waves during the 1960s and 1970s, the concept of direct selling (in other words, where the  salesperson comes to the customer rather than the customer having to go to a store) has been around for decades. Methods of direct selling our very and can range  from a party plan to a door sales call (Rock, 1995). Almost everyone has fond memories of their Fuller Brush man -- and that man was simply a direct seller.  But during the 1980s, as more and more women entered the workforce and attain a professional positions, fewer representatives were available to  sell door-to-door or to host home parties (Sussman and Horan, 1990).
