    women. Sound like something cut from todays headlines? Think again. It was all a part of the cultural, socio-economic, and political climate of 1910-1919. SOCIAL STRUCTURE, GENDER ISSUES AND POLITICS  Most in the United States at this time still farmed, though a good deal of the cities were experiencing growth as well. Immigration was high and nearly thirteen million people,  between the years of 1900 and 1914 left Europe for the United States(American Cultural History, 2002). In the West, the Homestead Act sent a good deal of people out west  hoping to claim some land for their own. With all this shifting of families and the influence of the steady and strong influx of immigrants, each bringing with them  new ideas and customs, the social structure within the family and within the community became almost stringent. Children, as well as women, were viewed as objects and property. Quite often  children were expected to work extremely long hours either in the field or in the citys factories. Conditions inside the factories were atrocious, to say the least. Women fared no  better. If a woman found herself in an abusive situation, she was out of luck. A woman could not formally petition for divorce, nor could she legally own anything, even  if it was inherited, if she was married. The first suffrage parade took place in 1910, but it wouldnt be until 1919 that the nineteen amendment would be passed(The Timeline,  2002). Womens rights began their movement during this time, but the social structure of the family still comprised primarily of the father being the head of the household and  the sole provider of income. The wife was expected to tend to the task of maintaining the house and raising the children. If children were in the city and of
