    difficult to miss, which impairs the narrative flow of this work. In presenting her thoughts, which are quite instructive, Byatt often intrudes  into the story in the manner of a Victorian narrator, instructing the reader in how to properly think, feel and react to the text rather then trusting her readership to  interact freely with the story and characters. In an effort to keep the reader precisely directed, Byatt often indulges in prose that is heavy-handed. For instance, this exchange between Adamson  and Eugenia occurs early on in the story as they dance at the Alabaster mansion. Nothing he did now seemed to happen without this double vision, of things seen and  done otherwise, in another world. "You are thinking of the Amazon," said Eugenia. "Are you gifted at thought-reading?" "Oh no. Only you looked far away. And that  is far away" (Byatt 2). Nevertheless, Byatt has some significant points to make on the human condition, which she pictures as  being located somewhere between the "angels" and the "insects"?the higher spiritual world and the natural world. Humanity must struggle to maintain a proper balance, and Byatt makes it clear that  both viewpoints are essential. "Morpho Eugenia" tells the story of a Victorian scientist, William Adamson, who has been studying ants, beetles and  butterflies for years in the rainforests of the Amazon. On the trip home to England, most of his specimens are lost in a shipwreck. Facing personal catastrophe, Adamson is taken  in by the Reverend Harold Alabaster, an amateur scientist who shares his interests and who is also a wealthy baronet. Alabaster brings Adamson to his mansion, where the shattered scientist
