History A&W was started  in 191 and is one of the oldest fast food franchises in the US today. The history of the company begins in 1919 when Roy Allen set up a road  side drinks stand to serve drinks during a welcome home parade for veterans of the First World War in Lodi, California (A&W Root Beer, 2006). The drink being sold was  a new creamy drink, and in this we see Roy Allen was using a first mover advantage (Grant, 2004), but he did not realise this at the time. The development  of the drink was not Allenss, he had bought the formula for the drink from a pharmacist in Arizona. The drink was very successful and he started a business  selling the root beer and following the first drinks stand in Lodi a second was opened in Sacramento. This stand was opened with the concept of the drive in, indeed,  it is believed this may have been the first drive in in the US (A&W, 2006). The curb side service was supported with the use of tray boys (A&W, 2006).  In 1922 Roy Allen took on a partner; Frank Wright, it was using the initial of their surnames that A&W root beer got its name (A&W, 2006). This  partnership allowed for faster growth, three more units were opened in Sacramento and expansion increased with branches opening in Central and Northern California and then into Texas and Utah (A&W,  2006). The growth was aided with the use of a franchise model. In the early days there were few controls over the franchisees and the food they sold was
